Art of the Matter

It is at the heart of Art of the Matter's mission to support experimental art forms and educational outreach. Our approach to art and education reflects our belief that art and everyday life are not in fact, separate events but that Art is the human attempt to create meaning and to introduce formal shapes and paths through the chaos of the life experience.

Art of the Matter Performance Foundation was founded in 1988 by artistic director Deborah Slater and a small group of artists and arts enthusiasts who were eager to support experimental art forms and educational outreach. In pursuit of this mission, AOTM acts as the umbrella organization for DEBORAH SLATER DANCE THEATER, a professional multi-ethnic dance/theater company; The Company She Keeps , an amateur multi-ethnic community-based performing group; and Studio 210, a low-cost rehearsal and performance facility located in the Mission District and used by a variety of Bay Area artists and arts organizations. Art of the Matter is also a Fiscal Agent for a diverse group of artists.

Since l989, AOTM has become an important part of the artistic life of the Bay Area, recognized for the innovative nature of its presentations and for its unbounded commitment to education and outreach. The organization's artistic work has been produced locally at Theater Artaud, the ODC Performance Gallery, Magic Theater, Intersection for the Arts, the Marin Theater Company, the Eureka Theater, Herbst Theater, and its own Studio 210. AOTM has been included in Summerfest, the San Francisco Dance Festival, and the Bay Area Dance Festival.

Nationally, represented by Deborah Slater Dance Theater, AOTM has been represented at Dance Theater Workshop in New York, the Living Arts Center in Tulsa, OK, the Exploration Series and Cocteau Centenary in Los Angeles and the Performa Festival in Seattle, WA to name a few.

AOTM is strongly committed to community outreach, and in 1991 DSDT worked with children from the Charilla Home for Abused Girls, the Cabrillo Boys Home and The Company She Keeps to produce the video version of Ms. Slater's "Out of Disguise," a collaboration with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Chris Beaver. The company has dedicated its past efforts to the creation and production of evening-length works that explore timely social issues, and it continues to do so. Research for the works involve the gathering of interpretations of, and perspectives on, these issues from the company's artistic team of collaborators, company members, and members of the communities in which Ms. Slater and her collaborators work and live.

To strengthen the company's work and increase box office earnings, the company continues to develop a theater performance model for the presentation of its work. This allows for a longer gestation period in the studio for development of the work and for work-in- progress showings from which valuable feedback is gained, and extended performance runs.
